International experts talk Indigenous mental health approaches at Toronto symposium

Approximately 20 panellist from every continent came together at the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto on Wednesday to share their opinions and findings regarding the approaches to Indigenous mental health and wellbeing. Indigenous mental health has been a growing concern treatment needs to take the cultural framework into consideration, but the awareness for this consideration is not yet ubiquitous. Dr. David Dante, program head of the University of Guelph-Humber's psychology program has said he needed to "familiarize myself or acquiant myself with some of the contextual issues of why we see some discrepant mental health outcomes in some communities." Thus this initiative is an important step forward for encompassing indigenous communities in the national mental health concern.
